And in regards to your point about backlinks, submitting to niche directories can be even more valuable in regards to the search engines and targeted human eyeballs: aka potential customers or website/newsletter/blog owners who may want to use your article and give you credit and links... I have a free resource page with over 200 article directories that are not only ranked by Google PR (a decent barometer of link value and traffic), but also separated by type. And the niche directory section is especially worthwhile submitting to, regardless of PR rank, if its theme is the same as your article's topic and the website it links to. The SEs understandably value inbound links from a similarly themed website (the article directory site) to your own website, because its "on topic".
